Bedtime Story

a glance at her bedroom stance

and i knew we were in

for a roiling night,

grappling with her shadows-

larger and keener than she ever was;

looming threateningly

even as she cowered, dull

and listless, limp to assault

from within, very sharp.

shadow-boxing is the sport

that i play every other night

as i beg my darling

to come back to bed

and give all a rest.

let’s change the color of our nights,

paint them red and stuff the blues,

shall we, my edgy white thing?

Deep and blue
